How It Works

Who can be a PCO?

Any registered Washington State voter with a residential address in Benton County that is a member of the Republican Party may become a PCO candidate. A PCO candidate files an online Declaration of Candidacy form. Voters do not register by political party in Washington State. A candidate must declare himself/herself to be a member of the Republican party at the time of filing.

Election of a PCO

Write-in candidates are not allowed for PCO elections, if only one person files for office, he or she is deemed elected. If there are no candidates that file for office of PCO, the PCO position is filled by the county chair of the Benton County Republican Central Committee.

Term of Office and Vacancies

The PCO’s term of office is two years. If a vacancy occurs in the office (caused by death, disqualification, resignation, or failure to elect), the chairperson of the Benton County Republican Central Committee appoints a PCO to the vacant position.

Duties of a Precinct Committee Officer

Each PCO is a member of the Benton County Republican Central Committee. The committee is authorized to nominate persons or fill vacancies for a state, legislative or county office. They may also elect members to the State Central Committee. They participate in party activities and represent the party.

PCOs are elected and function at the grass roots level.

Precinct committee officer—Election—Term.

The statutory requirements for filing as a candidate at the primaries apply to candidates for precinct committee officer. The office must be voted upon at the primaries, and the names of all candidates in contested races must appear under the proper party and office designations on the ballot for the primary for each even-numbered year. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes will be declared elected. The term of office of precinct committee officer is two years, commencing the first day of December following the primary.
